Developing leaders in clinical social work
The post-MSW fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center provides advanced training for social workers who want to become leaders in the field of clinical social work. Social Work Fellows participate in both multi-disciplinary and discipline specific training, which includes didactics, intensive supervision, and direct practice.
Didactics include Grand Rounds, seminars on a wide range of topics in child mental health, and clinical staff meetings.
Each fellow will work individually with licensed clinical social workers who are members of the Yale Child Study Center faculty. These supervision hours are in compliance with licensing requirements in the state of Connecticut. Depending on local regulations, these requirements may be reciprocal when applying for licensing in other states.
Each fellow chooses a direct practice track for their training and supervision: the Outpatient Clinic or the Intensive In-Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (IICAPS). The clinical experience includes clinical assessment, treatment planning, individual psychotherapy with child or parent, family treatment, child guidance, parent guidance, support and case coordination and management.
Within each service, clients are presented at Rounds regularly to discuss treatment with a group of cross-disciplinary colleagues and review progress. Rounds are attended by the rounds leaders and all clinical staff (social workers, nurses, psychiatrists, and psychologists) assigned to the group.

Eligible applicants must have satisfactorily completed accredited Master’s level training in Social Work, Master Level Social Worker licensing requirements for the state of Connecticut, and DMV and criminal background checks by the start of the training year (July 1st) for which applying. Preference is given to applicants with previous direct clinical experience.
Seminars and training activities include: Departmental Grand Rounds, Social Work Seminar, Fundamentals of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychopharmacology for Non-Physicians, Minding the Baby – Reflective Functioning, Young Child Seminar, and Clinical Staff Meeting.
Fellows in the Outpatient Track will take the Outpatient Clinic Provider Orientation. Fellows in the IICAPS track will take an IICAPS training.

Content: Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic Track
The Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic for Children (OPC) is to optimize the developmental potential of children and families by providing the most effective treatment interventions available based on the principles of child development and child psychopathology. Treatment focuses on family involvement and utilizes data to improve and refine our approach to child and adolescent mental health services.
Social work fellows in this track will participate in the OPC Provider Orientation.
Psychotherapeutic services include:
- cognitive behavioral treatments
- trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy
- parent management training, family therapy
- problem-solving skills training
- play therapy
- traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy
Group therapies include:
- social skills
- anger management
- groups for youth identifying or questioning their sexual orientation/identity.
Intensive In-Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services Track
Intensive In-Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (IICAPS) promotes positive child and family functioning through developmentally informed, theory-based programs and practices delivered in the child and family’s home. Services are accessible, culturally competent, and responsive to the strengths and needs of each child and family. The overarching goal of IICAPS is the maintenance of each child’s primary relationship with parents or other adults in the interest of permanency and safety.
IICAPS serves children and adolescents with severe emotional disturbances who are at high risk for psychiatric hospitalization as well as those involved in both the mental health and juvenile justice systems and at risk for placement in either hospital or detention facilities. All services are provided by two person teams of licensed or license-eligible social workers, psychologists, nurses, professional counselors, and bachelor’s level mental health counselors. Treatment includes individual, parent, and family therapies. Clinical services include collaboration with schools and other service providers.
Core Training includes an IICAPS specific training. The clinical experience includes on call Monday through Friday, and on call rotation on weekends and holidays in the second half of the year.
In addition to individual supervsion by faculty, clinical supervision will be provided to each clinical team by faculty within IICAPS.
